Is it better to sell antiques privately or at auction?

The best way to sell your antiques depends on your priorities. If your main goal is achieving the highest possible price, an auction may be worth considering, particularly for rare, highly collectible, or specialist items. Auctions can attract competitive bidding, which can sometimes drive prices above expectations.

However, auctions aren't without risks. There is no guarantee that an item will sell, and auction houses typically charge seller's fees and commissions. The process can also take several weeks or even months from valuation to payment.

Selling directly to an antique buyer offers a faster and more straightforward alternative. Once an offer is agreed, you can usually complete the sale and receive payment much more quickly. There are also no auction fees to worry about, and you avoid the uncertainty of waiting for bidders.

For larger collections, inherited items, or house clearances, selling to a professional antique buyer can be particularly convenient, as many companies offer valuations, collection services, and immediate offers for multiple items at once.

It really does depend on what you have and what you want to achieve. Some antiques may achieve their best price at auction, while others can be sold quickly and efficiently through a trusted buyer. If you're unsure which route is right for you, seeking a professional valuation is often the best place to start.
