What are maker's marks and why do they matter?

Maker’s marks are small stamps, signatures, or symbols left on an item by the person or company that made it.

They are commonly found on antiques such as silver, jewellery, ceramics, furniture, and watches, and they often appear in discreet places like the underside of an object, inside a band, or on the back of a piece.

These marks are important because they help identify the origin of an item. A maker’s mark can tell you who created it, where it was made, and sometimes even when it was produced. In many cases, this information is essential for determining authenticity.

For example, in silver items, maker’s marks are often found alongside hallmarks and can help confirm not just the manufacturer but also the quality and purity of the metal. In ceramics, marks may indicate the pottery or factory of origin, which can significantly affect desirability among collectors.

Maker’s marks also play a key role in valuation. Items produced by well-known makers or prestigious workshops are often more sought after and can command higher prices. Even within the same category, two visually similar pieces can have very different values depending on the maker.

However, it’s important to note that not all marks automatically guarantee high value. Some are from lesser-known manufacturers, and others may be later reproductions or imitation marks added to copy more desirable pieces.

If you’re unsure what a mark on your item means, a professional appraisal can help identify it correctly and determine whether it adds value. Clear photographs of the mark, along with the item itself, are usually enough for an initial expert assessment.
