Can cleaning antiques reduce their value?

Cleaning antiques might seem like a sensible way to improve their appearance before selling, but in many cases it can actually reduce their value. Whether or not cleaning is a good idea depends heavily on the type of item, its age, and its current condition.

One of the main reasons cleaning can reduce value is that many antiques are prized for their original surface and patina. Patina refers to the natural ageing that develops over time, such as the soft glow on old wood, the darkened finish on silver, or the gentle wear on bronze. Collectors and buyers often see this as proof of authenticity and age. If an item is aggressively cleaned or polished, that natural character can be lost and may not be recoverable.

Another risk is damage caused during cleaning. Delicate materials like porcelain, oil paintings, textiles, and certain metals can be easily scratched, stripped, or weakened by inappropriate cleaning products or techniques. Even something as simple as polishing silver too heavily can remove fine details or hallmarks over time.

However, this doesn’t mean antiques should never be cleaned. In some cases, light and careful cleaning can be appropriate, particularly if an item is dirty in a way that obscures important features such as maker’s marks or decorative detail. The key distinction is between gentle surface care and deep restoration or polishing.

As a general rule, it is usually best to avoid any major cleaning or restoration before having an item assessed by an expert. What may look like improvement can sometimes lower both historical interest and market value.

If you’re unsure, the safest approach is to leave the item as it is and seek professional advice first. An expert can advise whether cleaning will help or harm its value based on the specific piece and current market demand.
